Introduction
This adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s “Salome” into a Korean traditional opera (changgeuk) casts male actors in the roles of Princess Salome and Queen Herodias, breaking free of gender stereotypes to focus on the essence of the characters. A one-night tragedy of love, desire, and obsession spirals toward ruin, as the cries of collapse merge with the sorrow-laden sounds of pansori to resound even more intensely and dramatically.
